Alumni Spotlight: Caroline Hull on Making Personal Connections and Learning to Be Yourself
Caroline Hull on making personal connections and how she learned to be herself to make her business take off!
Welcome to our founder spotlight! As part of our new SCF Community, we've asked a few of our members to be SCF Advisors. We're highlighting our them this week, we're talking to Caroline Hull. She is the artist and designer behind the "green without the granola" cards, notepads, and paper products from Caroline Creates
Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you.
My Name is Caroline and I'm a mommy, wife and full time biz owner of Caroline Creates! I have a background in music and was a ballet dancer at the University of Oklahoma before finding my niché in design. Originally from Texas, I now live in Nashville, Tennessee with my husband Chris and our daughters Fiona and Maeve. When I'm not designing, you can find me checking out the latest indie music sensation, trying to recycle everything in sight, buying more pens and most likely stalking a coffee shop. I also have a passion for helping other small business owners like myself and do this through my website www.creatingbizness.com.
How long have you been in business and how did you get your start?
I've been in business for 8 years. After college, I stopped dancing due to injury and found myself employed as an assistant at a publishing company. The art department needed help so they taught me some basic things. By the end of my time there, I was designing ads for the magazine. When I got engaged, I designed and created all of my paper including the invitation and it just kind of took off from there.
What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
I love working for myself and being able to make my own schedule. I am a mom first so that is really important to me. I also just love that my business is something that I built with my own two hands. I've learned a ton about myself in the process and am so proud of the example I'm setting for my girls.
Choose one: Maker, Artists or Designer - and tell us why.
Can I say all of them? I definitely lean more toward artist these days. I feel like everything I create is a work of art. The medium is just different than a canvas.
What do you wish someone would have told you before going into business for yourself?
How hard it would be! I think when I started my business I had this idea that people would automatically come to my site and buy. I didn't realize that I would have to sell! Now I focus more on marketing and such than I did before.
What is your one networking tip for this community?
Make personal connections and get involved! You only get what you put in so be active in conversation. I would also say, don't be afraid to ask questions or post. I'm an introvert by nature so I know how hard this can be but I also know how rewarding the connections are that you can make in this industry.
What are you most excited about as a member of this community?
Getting to meet everyone! I love meeting new artists and designers and helping them on their journey! So excited!
Anything you’d like to add?
The most important thing I've learned in business is to be yourself. The minute I became true to who I am, my business took off. I totally encourage everyone in this community to do the same!
