Make This Your Breakout Year - Revenue and Marketing Strategy Tool

We have a way of dreaming big, us creatives.

Each year, you create your list of things that will get you closer and closer to your ideal lifestyle and business.

If you’ve been running a creative business for awhile you know the beginning of the year brings "all the feels" of a fresh start, new ideas, and working on something huge! We all get that feel-good, nostalgic flood of emotions from resolutions, making plans, and celebrating accomplishments.

By now, you probably have your plan created (at least I hope you do). You’ve hemmed in those starry-eyed dreams of creative world domination to a few awesome goals that are going to help grow your business.

But you know it's time to buckle down. And if this is going to be your breakout year, you need to add some strategies to your plan that seasoned business owners use - something to tie up the loose ends of your revenue and marketing strategy.

Now, you're ready to buckle down and get it done. It’s one thing to have dreams and a goals, but some will take more than just hard work and execution.

Let’s say one of your goals is to launch a new website…

You hire a web developer, someone to help you get orders out the door so you can focus the new site, and possibly even a get a copywriter to help you write launch or website copy for you. Costs will pop up here and there, like monthly shop hosting fees, transaction fees, plugins that make your site run smoother, extra hours from your developer and so on. Until you hit that moment where you just scream “stop the bleeding!” and do a full halt half way through or bootstrap the rest of it.

Let’s say one of your goals is to do a trade show or “go wholesale”…

You develop a collection, order samples, higher a photographer, get your pricing and line sheet together, spend hours on designing your catalog, you design a great booth, and you even find time to send a mailer out to potential retailers. You’ve dedicated the last eight months of your life to getting to the National Stationery Show and now it’s time to show the world what they’ve been missing. Except there’s a problem. No one buys anything. And you flushed five figures down the drain because someone told you that exhibiting a trade show was the only way to go wholesale.

Let’s say one of your goals is to add a new product line or revenue stream...

You develop your new ideas, create a collection, order samples, take product pictures, update all your shop listings, create a huge launch and blast it out everywhere. You didn’t want to commit to a huge amount of inventory, so you didn’t order a ton of each item and your cost was a little high. (Or, you took a gamble and ordered really high quantities to get yours costs lower). But, now you’re sitting on a lot of product and your shop has crickets chirping because no one is buying.

Anyone see where I’m going with this?

mistakes-breakout-year-creative-business-owner-creative-founders-marketing-strategy-revenue-plan-forecast
mistakes-breakout-year-creative-business-owner-creative-founders-marketing-strategy-revenue-plan-forecast

So here’s the thing: you can be financially reactive to all of this and hope that your new website brings in a ton of orders, your trade show is widely successful, or your products fly off the shelves - pray the funds come in to cover all the costs you just created.

Or, if you’re DIYing your project, all the time you spent making this goal happen is taking away from actually working in your business and your revenue will suffer.

Big projects and launches not only take hard work and execution, they take money. And, whether it’s your time or your credit card balance, your costs will add up unexpectedly.

While you’re in the middle of your project, all you’ll be able to think about is how much more revenue you need to make before that next credit card bill comes and how out of control you feel.

What if I told you it didn’t have to be that way?

The first big mistake keeping you from your breakout year: You’re playing financial catch-up all the time.

You can start to wonder how you’re actually going to reach your goals. The fear of being in one of the scenarios I just listed can keep you from taking action.

Goals are so very important, but there must be a strategy behind them to make them work. You must be diligent to continue the task of working toward them and be laser focused.

If you've only created a list of goals, you probably just have a glorified, year long to-do list. How are you implementing your goals into all aspects of your activity to really move the needle toward your "when I'm 80" life and business visions.

The second big mistake keeping you from your breakout year: You stopped planning once you finished your goals for the year.

When you create a goals list for the year, a lot of tasks and seemingly "busy work" shows up. You know that you need to create a revenue plan or a launch strategy to launch something this year. You need to understand how you can finance that new website or collection or how you're going to grow your email list.

Instead of thinking of all those tasks as individual to-do items, you should look to how they are connected, how they can support each other, and most importantly how they are contributing to your goals through measurement.

Even if you kept going on planning and executing a better revenue and marketing strategy and streamlining your activity to funnel directly toward your goals this year, they must be connected to each other.

creative-founders-creating-marketing-strategy-plan-revenue-financial-forecasting-measuing-goals-finish-your-plan

The third big mistake keeping you from your breakout year: You haven't connected your goals to your revenue and marketing strategy or figured out how to measure everything.

You need to know exactly what type of revenue you’ll bring in, which products or services are most profitable, what cash flow might look like, what you can pay yourself, and feel in control of your finances.

You need to create a plan... to bring in the revenue you need... to make your goals happen. And that is done through marketing strategy and measurement with all your marketing efforts funneled directly in support of your revenue goals. Which, in turn, supports goals and dreams.

What if you had clarity on exactly how you were going to make your dreams a reality?

When your marketing efforts support your revenue, and your revenue efforts support your goals, you won’t have squirrel moments anymore. Everything will be streamlined, you’ll know exactly how to choose which ideas and tasks need to happen, and your productivity will sky rocket.

Creating plans like this is what separates hobbyists from business owners and business owners from founders. You’ll see a difference in your productivity levels, your revenue and cash flow, your marketing success, and your confidence.

You’ll be running your creative business from a place of clarity and reality versus guessing and winging it.

After searching for something like this for my own creative business - a template, a guide, a class… anything to help - I decided to create my own. As a marketing director for 10+ years, I worked from the overall corporate and revenue goals set by our executive team and created a marketing strategy, budget, and plan, connecting multiple departments with aligned goals.

I took that experience and created a revenue plan and marketing strategy that is specifically for creative businesses in support of their goals.

Most people assume once they have their plan finished, they’re done for the year. But I know you aren’t most people. Your next step, after creating your yearly goals, is to create a revenue plan and a marketing plan so you can stop playing financial catchup, finish your plan, and connect your revenue and sales projections and marketing activity in support of your goals.

You don’t have to cobble together something a corporate marketing executive or email marketing brand put together to make it work for your type of business.

It also doesn’t have to be hard, complicated, overwhelming, or time consuming.

I created the The Creative Biz Revenue, and Marketing Strategy Workshop because…

  • I continue to get questions about how to create a marketing plan and know what platforms are working for creative businesses.
  • I’ve seen the light bulb moment and revenue growth my students have once they complete their financial forecast and understand their numbers.
  • I was tired of seeing people just create really long to-do lists for the year, instead of a real business strategy and plan.

I knew we needed to create this as a bundle to help creative business owners become better founders of their businesses by using tools that established corporations are using to maximize their growth and not work in silos. Now, you can have a master plan of your own that is built specifically for creatives.

The Creative Biz Revenue and Marketing Strategy Workshophelps creative business owners go from having a long list of disconnected goals for the year to making every effort you take to get yourself out there have meaning and purpose by creating fully integrated, well rounded goals, built with strategy that develops a solid revenue and marketing plan.

  • This is a live, interactive workshop with practical application and personal coaching that you can actually use to see growth in your business.
  • Connect your goals, revenue, and marketing throughout all parts of your business so you’re laser focused and not spinning your wheels wondering why nothing’s working.
  • Connect with other business owners like you who have their own strengths and share your knowledge with them as well.
  • Show up at a live event so you know you’ll hold yourself accountable to do the work and complete your plan. It’s a virtual workshop so don’t have to leave you house or pjs.
  • Feel organized and empowered with clear goals you can measure.
  • Know where to spend your time and efforts in a way that will not only benefit your business, but that will benefit you as an individual.
  • Join the ongoing Facebook group for further help and coaching and office hours from me (Jennifer) and your peers.
  • Graduate with a completed strategy, revenue, and marketing plan for 2017.

We’ll be holding 4 hours live workshops and 2 office hours over two days with and unlimited Facebook group coaching for 30 days after the Masterclass ends. Each day will include one lesson that builds upon the previous as we work through the class workbook. We’ll be doing the work in the classroom, not talking at you and leaving you with a bunch of homework.

The Creative Biz Revenue and Marketing Strategy Workshop Monday, February 6–Tuesday, February 7, 2017 9:30 A.M.–11:30 A.M. Eastern Time each day

Here's the schedule:

Prerequisite - Annual Planning & Goal Setting (free with registration)

Most of our students will have already completed the My 2017 Plan FounderClass. But, if you haven't, you need to take 2-3 days to work through this class that is designed to help you create specific and measurable goals

It's about approaching annual planning from the mindset of a founder—getting tactical and granular and making the most out of the time you spend on your business so it can support your life, rather than the other way around!

You’ll develop a life and business vision to use as our guide to setting longer term milestone goals which will lead you to developing your annual plan and schedule. You’ll finish the day by creating your First 60 Days plan for 2017. Along the way, we’ll help you discover good productivity habits and workflow for each week and quarter of the year.

Instead of creating what is essentially a year-long to-do list, you actually have a strategy in place that you’re confident in executing, without feeling overwhelmed.

Plus, I'll be in the Facebook group leading up to the first day of the Masterclass to help answer your questions about the Annual Planning Homework.

Day 1 - Financial Forecasting & Revenue Plan

This lesson will build upon the work you did in the My 2017 Plan prerequisite class. You'll also have some work to do to make this class go smoother by pulling some numbers that should be easy for you to access in your accounting software.

This lesson is about getting comfortable with your numbers, which can totally change your business for the better. We’ll break down each revenue stream and individual products or services to make revenue projections for the upcoming year. Then, we’ll gather together all your expenses and see how they compare to the revenue you expect to make. Finally, we’ll help you understand how to use all that information to make good strategic decisions about your business.

You’ll know exactly how and where you can expect money to come into your business, what your most profitable lines of business will be, and how much you can predict to pay yourself next year. Best of all, you’ll know what sales numbers you need to hit to stay on track. This is not accounting - this is the type of work a CEO does for their business - it's forecasting and strategy.

After the live class, we'll take a lunch break and then I'll join you in our private Facebook group with office hours that afternoon to help you continue to do the work.

Day 2 - Marketing Strategy and Plan

This class is will build upon the work we did in the My 2017 Plan and the Financial Forecasting and Revenue Plan lesson.  It's about developing the goals, strategies, objectives, and message for your business and getting an action plan together so you can execute your marketing tactics throughout the year. We do a brief overview of your  ideal client to prepare you for researching the best marketing actives and social media platforms to best reach your audience.

We’ll take the revenue goals you created in the previous lesson from Day 2 and create a strategy for you to reach them. You’ll set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), complete a set of objectives and specific marketing goals, understand your value proposition, teach you how to research which marketing platforms are best for you and finally create a marketing content schedule and plan with a place to track your results.

We'll hold office hours again in the afternoon to help you continue your work.

Office Hours & Hot Seats

You work won't end after the final office hours because you will have some work to complete. I'll continue to hold office hours in the following weeks to answer your questions, live in the Facebook group.

Once your plan is more solidified and you start to see it come together, you can sign up for a hot seat with me, Jennifer (first come, first served and limited to 5 students) where we'll go over your plan in detail, together on a coaching call together.

You'll have 30 days to watch the replay videos, which will be the accountability you're looking for in finishing your plan.

Each of these lessons build upon one another to give you a complete, complete and wholistic plan for the year. Plus, you'll have a place to keep track of both your revenue and marketing in our custom excel spreadsheets for creative business owners.

So who is The Creative Biz Revenue and Marketing Stategy Workshop perfect for?

  • Anyone who has been looking for a yearly business strategy, revenue, and marketing plan template specifically for their type of creative business.
  • Anyone who is tired of buying online classes and courses that they never finish. We’ve created an environment of community that will encourage you to show up and do the work needed to finish your plan.
  • Anyone who is looking for practical applications of what they are learning without a sale pitch.
  • Robust, rich information that is not only applicable right now, but knowledge you’ll be able to use forever.
  • Stationery designers, artists, makers, designers, illustrators, calligraphers, handletterers, branders, gift product designers, Etsy shop or online shop owners... basically, if you call yourself a "creative business owner" this is perfect for you whether you sell product or offer a service.
  • You're ready to take your planning a step further and make this your breakout year by aligning all your sales and marketing efforts under your goals.
  • You're willing to do the prerequisite work that will prepare you for the class.
  • You're a self-starter and have the time to commit to take action and can hold yourself accountable to finish your plan in the next 30 days.

This Masterclass isn't a good fit if...

  • you're a retail brick and mortar shop or in direct sales.
  • you haven't started you business yet or are very new. You'll need to have a few years of expenses and revenue under your belt for these advanced concepts to work for you.
  • you want easy answers or aren’t willing to do the work.
  • you're looking for specific marketing tactics - we aren't teaching a course on how to use Instagram or create Facebook ads.
  • you'd rather outsource your plan to someone and are looking for someone to do the work for you.
  • you want to be a fly on the wall and not participate in the class fully. You need to be comfortable asking for help, feedback, or guidance since we'll be doing this work together.

So how it this different from every other yearly planning workshop out there?

  • Other classes, courses, and challenges don't offer this sort of approach by connecting the dots between your goals, revenue, and marketing while all working toward your overall business vision and mission.
  • If you’ve purchased courses before and you weren’t able to commit, our live format will force you to show up and do the work. Think of it as a live, virtual conference you can go to in your yoga pants. You don’t have to leave the kids and/or husband and/or fur babies to fend for themselves, pay for a flight, or even pack a bag.
  • If you think you can trust yourself to figure it out (like in the past when you’ve cobbled together resources), this is your reality check. Why would you make it harder on yourself when we have the answers right here in an easy format? You wouldn’t let your accountant design your website, so why would you try and DIY your revenue and marketing plan when you aren’t an expert at it. You’re way past the DIY phase of your business!
  • If you think you already have a plan that is good enough to get you through, you’ll waste your time working on non-meaningful tasks that aren’t laser focused on your goals.  You must create a plan that is supported by your revenue and marketing.

If this is going to be their breakout year, get your strategy together so you’re ahead.

For just $279, you can complete your strategic plan with a revenue and marketing plan. Normally, this would be a $750 workshop.

It can be easy and manageable with our simple templates and guidance.

Connect your goals, revenue, and marketing throughout all parts of your business so you’re laser focused and not spinning your wheels wondering why nothing’s working. This live event will force you to get a complete strategy pulled together in just 3 days from the comfort of your own home.

Feel organized and empowered with clear goals you can measure, know where to spend your time and efforts, and be a part of an ongoing community. Finish Your 2017 Plan.

As soon as you register, you'll receive the Pre-Class Workbook so you can get started.

Here are more details on the class schedule and timeline.

Prerequisite (work you'll do on your own leading up to the class)

You'll work through the homework and, if needed, the My 2017 Plan FounderClass™ that is included in your acceptance into the The Creative Biz Revenue and Marketing Strategy Workshop as a student. You should block out a couple of hours over 2-3 days to complete the FounderClass™. The Revenue Plan and Financial Forecasting lesson will require you to pull your expenses from the previous year which, as a seasoned business owner, you should have easy access to in your accounting software.
